Advertising usually plays a part in any overall promotional strategy.

Commercial advertising can include: billboards, street furniture, flyers, radio, cinema and TV ads, web banners, magazines, newspapers, buses, cabs etc. Any situation where a 'sponsor' pays to deliver a message through a medium is advertising.
